Key Stage Three

Year 7

Pupils have 5 English lessons per week and themes covered in schemes of work consist of:

  • Write Now - a range of non fiction texts.
  • Spelling detectives
  • Narrative Writing
  • Theme parks
  • The Canterbury Tales
  • Ballads
  • Contemporary fiction text
  • Research Project
  • Creative poetry
  • Promoting holidays

Year 8

Pupils partake in 4 lessons per week. Themes covered consist of:

  • Myths & Legends
  • Game on! (research into computer games)
  • Heroes & Heroines
  • Contemporary fiction texts
  • Research project
  • Poetry from other cultures
  • Travel writing

Year 9

With SATS tests to prepare for, pupils in year 9 cover a variety of topics. Themes include:

  • Different styles of writing
  • Poetry comparison
  • Shakespeare
  • Analysing texts from other cultures
  • SATS Preparation, planning, writing and reading.

There are two mock examinations to prepare for the SATS exams in the autumn and spring terms.

In the final term pupils are introduced to GCSE.

Key Stage 4

The English GCSE has a strong literacy content. During the course every pupil will experience, Poetry, Drama and Novels; they will study Shakespeare, writing from other cultures, a range of media texts and works published before 1900.

Coursework

The coursework will consist of a selection of 5 pieces of written work:

  1. Original writing
  2. Media
  3. Response to Shakespeare
  4. Prose Study
  5. Twentieth Century

Plus a selection of oral coursework assessing the following abilities:

  1. Individual extended contribution
  2. Group interaction
  3. Drama focused activity

Assessment

  • 20% Written coursework
  • 20% Oral Coursework
  • 60% Examination

Spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting are worth extra marks in Coursework and the Examination.

English Literature will be taught as an integrated course but will be assessed separately. All students will be entered for both examinations.

The Coursework will consist of a selection of 3 pieces of written work which are cross over pieces with English Language.

  1. Shakespeare
  2. 20th Century Play
  3. Prose study plus study of an anthology of poetry and set text.

In the final examination pupils are permitted to take in their own copies, which must not be annotated, of the examination texts that they have studied during the course which has not been used for their coursework assignments.

Assessment

30% Coursework
70% Examination
