Individual Learning Needs

Woodlands provides full access to the National Curriculum for all children. All staff share the responsibility to ensure pupils receive the correct support. The Individual Learning Needs Department at Woodlands is committed to supporting all children to realise their full potential in the curriculum and beyond.

The support is offered in a variety of ways when pupils' needs have been identified:

  • Withdrawal from lessons to follow individual programmes of study to suit pupils' needs
  • Additional adult support in the classroom
  • Extra-curricular basic skills classes before and after college
  • Support with emotional and behavioural requirements through small group sessions to build self esteem, confidence an social skills
  • The involvement of professional agencies to help pupils with physical or sensory impairment
  • Other external services support includes the Educational Psychology Service, Education Welfare, Pupil Support Services and Connexions
  • Providing support through the Southampton Ethnic Minority Achievement Service for pupils whose first language is not English
  • The Link Group for re-integrating pupils who have been out of education and need the help to gain confidence to join the full curriculum
  • Strategies for children with Specific Learning Difficulties

We work closely with Junior and Primary Schools to ensure a smooth transition to Woodlands and that individual needs to continue to be met.

Parents are always welcome to come and discuss their child's particular needs and to look at the programmes and resources used by the department.
